Relativistic correlating basis sets for 57La and 89Ac

Developed and reported are compact yet efficient correlating basis sets for the ₅₇La and ₈₉Ac atoms, missing in the literature. A remarkable effect of ionic liquids in transition-metal-free aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols

The transition-metal-free aerobic oxidation of benzylic alcohols is uniquely accelerated by a 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMI-PF₆)/PhCF₃ biphasic system and Cs₂CO₃ to afford the corresponding ketones in good yields. The reaction system is also applicable to an oxidative cross-esterification of primary benzyl alcohols with a higher aliphatic alcohol.     

Phase behavior of binary mixtures composed of ethylene carbonate and various organic solvents

Phase behaviors of the binary mixtures composed of ethylene carbonate (EC) and aliphatic alcohols, ω-phenyl alcohols, and alkylbenzenes were investigated. In addition, heat of solution of EC into these organic solvents was measured. The EC/methanol and EC/ethanol systems gave homogeneous solution at the temperature above their liquidus lines, while the mixtures of EC and alcohols with longer alkyl chain showed a miscibility gap in a liquid phase and provided the monotectic-type phase diagram. The liquid–liquid phase separation region expanded with the increase in the alkyl chain length. A similar phase behavior was also observed for the mixtures of EC and alkylbenzenes. On the other hand, the EC mixtures with ω-phenyl alcohols showed no miscibility gap in a liquid phase at least up to 4-phenylbutan-1-ol which has C4 alkyl chain intervening between phenyl and hydroxyl groups. This result demonstrates that both of the hydroxyl and phenyl groups act to facilitate the mixing of aliphatic compounds with EC. The phase behavior of these EC mixtures was analyzed applying the modified regular solution model in which the pair interaction energy was regarded as free energy. The model calculation with the use of heat of solution of EC at infinite dilution as the pair interaction enthalpy reproduced well both of the experimentally obtained liquidus line and mutual solubility curve as well as monotectic point.     

Synthesis of bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) palladium complexes derived from (S,S)-1,2-bis(1-hydroxypropyl)benzene

New o-xylylene-linked bis(benzimidazolium) salts were synthesized in six-steps from C₂-symmetric chiral 1,4-diol, 1,2-bis(1-hydroxypropyl)benzene, as a starting material. The silver complex of bis(benzimidazol-2-ylidene) was obtained on treatment of bis(benzimidazolium) salt with silver oxide. The reaction of the silver bis-NHC with [PdCl₂(PhCN)₂] afforded the bis-NHC complex of palladium. The X-ray diffraction studies on Pd complexes revealed that these complexes have distorted square planar geometry around the Pd center coordinating the NHC ligand in mutually cis-position. The arene ring of o-xylylene unit hanged over the Pd center and thus these complexes showed C₁-symmetric structures. The variable temperature NMR spectroscopy revealed that these Pd complexes showed fluxional behavior between C₁- and C₂-symmetric structures in solution state.     

Synthesis of 4-unsubstituted dihydropyrimidines. Nucleophilic substitution at position-2 of dihydropyrimidines

Synthesis of novel 4-unsubstituted dihydropyrimidines (DPs) was performed. Subsequently, a variety of 4-unsubstituted 1,4(3,4)-DPs with amino moieties at position-2 were obtained in excellent yields by activation of position-2 owing to regioselective alkoxycarbonylation at position-3 of the DP skeleton. 3-Oxo-2-phenyl-2,3,5,8-tetrahydro[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a]pyrimidine was obtained using phenylhydrazine instead of amines. Individual tautomers of 1,4(3,4)-DP were observed in the ¹H NMR spectra of one derivative depending on temperature and concentration. On the other hand, only 1,4-DP was found in the solid state by single-crystal X-ray crystallography.     

Formation of double helix self-assembled monolayers of ethynylhelicene oligomer disulfides on gold surfaces

Optically active ethynylhelicene pentamers and hexamers linked by disulfide bonds were synthesized. They formed self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with double helix structure on gold surfaces, which were analyzed by infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (IR-RAS), quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and circular dichroism (CD). Double helix SAMs could be formed on gold surfaces either from double helices or random coils in solution. The double helices on the surface were more stable than in solution. This result suggested the presence of strong intercomplex interactions between double helix complexes on the surface.     

Enantioselective synthesis of chelidonine, a B/C-cis-11-hydroxyhexahydrobenzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloid

Both enantiomers of chelidonine, a B/C-cis-11-hydroxyhexahydrobenzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloid, were synthesized by manipulation of the B/C-dehydro ring juncture of benzo[c]phenanthridine skeleton using Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation and stereospecific catalytic hydrogenation after introduction of oxygen functions on the C ring as key reaction steps for the construction of stereogenic centers.
